Chipboard natural: what is it?

Chipboard natural is easy to process. Like MDF and OSB, it belongs to the family of fibreboards. Chipboard is structurally strong, lightweight, easy to assemble and does not warp. As more than three quarters of chipboard consists of residual wood, it is a durable product. Compared to MDF, the structure is coarser. This makes it more difficult to shape edges and corners than MDF. Furthermore, just like MDF, chipboard natural can be machined in all kinds of shapes and can be lacquered. However, it is necessary to prime chipboard first.

Chipboard natural is a constructional board. This means that this board material requires the necessary finishing before it can be used for visible work. Chipboard natural is not resistant to moisture. It is therefore only suitable for indoor projects in dry areas.

A sustainable choice

Chipboard natural is made of glued wood chips that are pressed together in three crosswise layers. This makes the board structurally strong. In comparison to MDF, coarser chips are used and in comparison to OSB, finer chips are used. Because a waste product (the wood chips) is used, chipboard is a sustainable product and relatively affordable.

Available thicknesses chipboard natural

With us, you can order standard customised chipboard in various thicknesses. You can easily specify the desired thickness in the product configurator. This way, you can be sure that the board material meets your requirements: both the format and the thickness of the material. The following thicknesses are available: 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm, 22 mm, 25 mm, 28 mm and 38 mm.

Machining of chipboard natural

Chipboard is good and easy to assemble or work with. When mounting the panel material, it is advisable to screw the screws to the rear or underside. That way, the screw holes are not visible. The fibres are held together by resin. Therefore, it is important to degrease the board properly before painting it. The material also sucks, which is why we recommend always finishing the edges with an edge sealer. For this reason, chipboard is only suitable for indoor applications and in dry conditions.

Are you going to paint chipboard? Then it is a good idea to countersink the screws and fill them with filler. Then sand and paint neatly in one go.

Specific applications of chipboard natural

Chipboard is widely used to make furniture. It is a versatile product that can be used for many purposes. For example, desk tops, cupboards, kitchen cupboards, bookcases, partitions or shelves. Furniture often has a large surface area, so the costs can mount up. Chipboard natural is a cheap board material with many possibilities.
