Solid cherry: what is it?

Cherry is a hardwood species. If you treat the wood well, it will last for years. Cherry wood has a yellow-brown to red-brown colour that darkens over time. This sheet material has a warm and luxurious appearance which is often used in furniture and interior construction. Cherry wood is a type of wood made from the wild cherry. Cherry wood is a relatively stable sheet, provided you treat it well with a lacquer or stain first. Cherry wood is not suitable for outdoor use. A cherry sheet is also called a Cherry furniture board or timber board, although it is not finished at the sheet edges as standard.

The solid cherry boards in our range are of high quality. This can be deduced from the visual grading. The visual grading is indicated by letters, often a combination of two letters with a separator between them. This can be found in the product name or the product properties. The first letter represents the top of the sheet, the second for the bottom or backside. A/B thus describes the top and bottom of the sheet. A is the best visual grading.

These solid boards are composed of three layers which are glued together crosswise. The two top layers are of high quality. The 5 mm thick top layers consist of falling wide sections of approx. 80 to 140 mm. The 10 mm thick core makes it a sturdy and stable whole. The core consists of the same wood as the top layers. In the core, all remaining material is processed that is not suitable for the visible sides: too short and too narrow wood, sapwood and other defects. The whole trunk is used, leaving almost no residual waste. Due to the 3-layer structure, this type of board is the most stable of all solid glued boards.

The direction of the wood grain

Timber board has a visible wood grain. The wood grain pattern always runs in the longitudinal direction. When sawing the sheet, we maintain that the longitudinal dimension is also the longitudinal direction of the wood grain. So be careful when filling in the measurements, so that the flames of the wood grain all run in the right direction!

Available thicknesses of solid cherry timber board

Solid timber boards can be ordered in various thicknesses. You can easily specify your desired thickness during the ordering process. This way you can be sure that the sheet material meets your requirements: both the size and thickness of the material. The following thickness(es) are available: 20 mm.

Machining solid cherry timber board

Cherry can turn grey when it comes into contact with iron or brass. It is therefore recommended to use stainless steel if you want to join metal with Cherry. Cherry wood can easily be sawn or milled, although it can splinter.

Once you have the sheet material in your home, we recommend that you first sand it with a fine grain (at least 180), so that the true colour of the wood appears. Sand the sheet and then finish it with a lacquer, stain, oil or varnish.

Specific applications of solid cherry timber board

European cherry are regularly used to make decorative furniture. Think of desks, chests, tables and dressers. It can also be used for interior panelling and stairs.
