Solid iroko: what is it?
Iroko has a warm appearance and for a solid wood species warps minimally. The appearance is often compared to the well-known teak and is characterized by its golden brown colour. In terms of appearance, these sheets show a strong resemblance to teak. Iroko has a moderately coarse grain and is fairly even, and the growth rings are clearly visible with this sheet material. It is advisable to sand and treat the board with thinner before finishing. This way you can be sure that the original wood colour will be finished. Iroko is also called an iroko furniture board or timber board, although it is not finished on the sheet edges as standard.
Quality grading for timber board
Timber board comes in different qualities. This does not mean that the sheet is more or less strong, it indicates the quality of the appearance of the sheet. The quality can be found in the product properties. More information about the visual grading below.
The solid iroko boards in our range are of high quality. This can be deduced from the visual grading. The visual grading is indicated by letters, often a combination of two letters with a separator between them. This can be found in the product name or the product properties. The first letter represents the top of the sheet, the second for the bottom or backside. A/B thus describes the top and bottom of the sheet. A is the best visual grading a wood species can have, with the sheet being almost knotless. The underside has visual grading B, which means that the underside can have a somewhat coarser appearance.

Iroko is a strong, highly durable wood species that warps minimally. When machining iroko, you need to have proper extraction. This is because substances can be released that can cause health problems for people who are sensitive to them. The solid sheet material is made up of slats. Slats are small wooden planks made entirely of pure wood. To be able to make a sheet of a larger size, several slats are combined into one large sheet. This results in a very solid and strong sheet. Keep in mind that no slat has the same appearance. The wood structure and colour of each slat is unique and can therefore also deviate from the image. Our solid sheets are interior bonded, which means that the material can only be used indoors.

The direction of the wood grain
Timber board has a visible wood grain. The wood grain pattern always runs in the longitudinal direction. When sawing the sheet, we maintain that the longitudinal dimension is also the longitudinal direction of the wood grain. So be careful when filling in the measurements, so that the flames of the wood grain all run in the right direction!
Available thicknesses of solid iroko timber board
Solid timber boards can be ordered in various thicknesses. You can easily specify your desired thickness during the ordering process. This way you can be sure that the sheet material meets your requirements: both the size and thickness of the material. The following thicknesses are available: 26 mm.
Machining solid iroko timber board
Machining iroko wood is easy. It is a hard wood type but easy to machine, easier than teak. When machining the wood, warping of certain parts may occur. Once machined and mounted in a dry place, iroko remains stable. Do you want to mount iroko with screws? Then it is advisable to do this with stainless steel (rustproof) screws and to pre-drill. Iroko turns grey to black when it comes into contact with iron.
Are you going to finish iroko? Note the following: iroko contains chlorophorine, an antioxidant that dissolves in organic solvents. This slows down the drying of water-based products. This can be improved by thoroughly cleaning the wood with thinner before treatment. Also avoid contact with concrete. Content substances in the iroko can slow down the curing of the concrete.
Specific applications of solid iroko timber board
Because iroko is a strong wood type that does not warp much, it is suitable for various purposes. Think of interior panelling, stairs, doors, but also furniture such as tables and wall shelves. Depending on the bonding of the board, this type of wood can be used both outdoors and indoors.
